Obituary

Mario Salvatore Velardi, a cherished soul known for his generous heart and unwavering friendliness, left this world on July 1, 2025, at the age of 93. Mario's exuberant spirit and loving nature touched all who knew him throughout his long and fulfilling life.

Mario cultivated a life of service and community that would define him for years to come. He carried these values with him to Montclair, where he spent his final years surrounded by those he loved and a community that loved him back. Not only did Mario serve his community, he proudly served in our US Army during the Korean Conflict.

Throughout his life, Mario was the epitome of dedication and hard work. His career as a produce manager at Belleville Shop Rite spanned several decades, where he was not only a respected employee but also a friend to all his colleagues and customers. His retirement did not mark the end of his service to others, as he continued to be active working for DeFranco Limousine, Frank Halpin's Brookdale Funeral Home, and later Halpin-Bitecola Brookdale Funeral Home.

A devout Catholic, Mario's faith was a cornerstone of his existence. He found great joy in serving as an usher at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, where he was also an active participant in various church activities. His commitment to his faith and community was evident to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Mario's interests reflected his generous and outgoing nature. He was a familiar face at local clubs, always ready to share a dance or a kind word in his dapper attire. His love for dining out at restaurants was matched only by his love for the people he would meet there. His warm, friendly demeanor made him a beloved figure in every social circle he was a part of.

Beyond his social engagements, Mario was deeply caring and selfless. He spent much of his time driving seniors to their medical appointments, ensuring they had not only transportation but also companionship. His desire to help and connect with others was a testament to his loving spirit.

Mario's family was a source of great pride and joy. He is survived by his nephews Dennis Vecchiarelli, Dennis' wife Debra, their son Danny Vecchiarelli, his niece Donna Lutz, his nephew John Galasione, niece Denise Diem, niece Lisa Mongelli and their extended familes, along with a close-knit circle of dear friends, particularly those from The Montclair House and St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Each of these individuals played a significant role in Mario's life, providing love, laughter, and cherished memories.

As we bid farewell to Mario, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love and selfless service. His journey on earth may have ended, but his spirit lives on through the countless lives he touched. Mario's story is not one of sorrow but a beautiful narrative of a man who gave so much and was loved so deeply in return. Mario was always so sweet, gentle, kind, and fun. My early memories are of Mario hanging bananas on the banana tree in the Shop Rite on Broughton Avenue back in the 1960's. Mario was usually singing or whistling a tune, and would always stop and inquire about the current activities in our little lives, then regale a story that related to that situation. While living on Pettit Street, Mario would make sure I was safe as I navigated my way from Broughton Avenue to Mill Street. There were times, decades later, when he was older, that I was able to ensure Mario's safety; navigating his steps, and inquire of the goings-on of his days. And, yes, Mario was quite the charmer. He will dearly missed. May he rest in peace.

You were just 19 when I was born, yet you treated me like your little sister, despite being my uncle. You affectionately called me, Don-Don, and you’ve always been my favorite. When my dad‘s job moved our family to San Diego, you and Aunt Grace made sure we remained a part of each other‘s lives. There were countless trips between San Diego and Bloomfield, and on a special trip, you took me to the Playboy club in New York for my 21st birthday. Those who truly know you wouldn’t be surprised! For 73 years, we’ve stayed close and you never forgot to ask about my son, Derek and my two granddaughters…always sending them your love. We were always there for each other good times and bad. So rest peacefully and when we meet again, we will party like never before! Your signature color has always been red so we chose the spray of red flowers. All my love, Donna (Don-Don)

Mario was a perfect gentleman. Every Sunday that I meet him at Mass in St Thomas the Apostle Church, he would ask him "How is your daughter doing, how old is she now? " He was always so sweet and always so meticulously dressed. May his gentle soul rest in peace. His presence will be missed by all. Kathryn.
