Thomas Maxwell King It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Thomas Maxwell King who passed away on June 9, 2020. Tom was born on October 23, 1939 in Jersey City and was raised in Newark, N.J. As an adult he resided in New York City and more recently in Bloomfield, N.J. Tom attended Xavier High School and was a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he majored in Civil Engineering. Subsequently he earned his Masters degree in Business Administration from Seton Hall University. Tom served his country proudly from 1963 - 1969 in the Army Corp of Engineers and continued his outstanding service while employed at the Pentagon in Washington DC. During his varied career he worked for a big eight accounting firm and also as a management consultant for many years. Tom was a kind, stately gentleman and he was devoted to all he knew but most particularly to his beloved mother, Catherine Rafferty King with whom he is no doubt rejoicing at their reunion in Heaven. Tom was devoutly religious and a generous donor to the church. He was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle in Bloomfield, NJ. For those who were lucky enough to know Tom, know that he always had a smile on his face, a glint in his eye and a kind word for all he met. Tom will be deeply missed by his family and friends. I was a very young mother when our family moved into the house next door to Tom's mother's home. Catherine welcomed us from the start and she and her sister Ann mothered us from time to time. Tom was a Manhattanite in those days and we got to know him on weekends. The time came when he became our full-time neighbor, as interested in growing grass and climbing ladders as he was in the business section of the paper. One day on a whim he decided to bake some brownies, but to experiment mildly with the recipe on the box. We all agreed that they were the best darn brownies we had ever tasted, far better than our own attempts. Thereafter, whenever he was invited anywhere he was asked to bake brownies and bring them with him. You were a good man, Tom, and you left us with many good memories, and I hope you wrote down how you tinkered with that recipe. Rest in peace! Anne Chambers

I first met Tom in 1958, when he was a freshmen at Notre Dame. Our friendship was renewed years later when he reached out to my son, Eddie, a 1988 ND alum, and me in 1998. Following this all five of my children, (and a growing number of grandchildren) would always look forward to the semi-annual visits Tom made back to campus - and to our homes as well. While he still kept his New York apartment, he offered a standing invitation for anyone of us to take advantage of it. One year two of my daughters took him up on this, bringing their own daughters - which allowed these little cousins to experience the Big Apple and nearby Juliard. In addition, he would frequently send his famous brownies to our various families over the years. Most especially, we appreciated his friendship and the countless dinners we enjoyed with him at the Morris Inn, lingering for long hours in sharing.
Tom had a good sense of humor, was generous, courtly, outgoing, fun...a true friend, gentleman, man of God, and a real blessing in our lives!
Bev Bradley

Tom was my 1st year roommate in Zahm at ND together with Brother Mary Kevin aka Dave Knox. We lost contact for many years until reconnecting after Tom's retirement. After reading about his great career I can assure you he was an officer and a gentleman even 1st year ND. A class act all the way. God bless you Tom and all connected to you. Jack Gentempo

Tom will be missed! He was such a gentle soul. He always loved to share his memories of my mother from childhood as well as his love for his alma mater, Notre Dame. I will always think of Tom when I visit the ND campus, where I will light a candle at the Grotto and say a prayer in his honor. He was a good man!
