Obituary
Alfred George Leigh, 94, died following a short illness on May 25, 2016. Alfred was born to English missionaries, David Leigh and Helen (Tyler) Leigh, in China on August 19, 1921. He immigrated to the US with his parents and beloved sister, Freda, and lived in the Paterson area. He married Jean Nye, and had two children, Ronald and Donna Jean. Al was a WWII veteran, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater as a Staff Sergeant. He participated in 4 major campaigns and received the Purple Heart from injuries received at the Battle of Iwo Jima. Al was an active member of the Brookdale Baptist Church, the American Legion, and the Appalachian Mountain Club. He was an avid hiker, skier, bicyclist, and participated in Search and Rescue missions throughout the years. Al will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren, great grand children, nieces, nephews, and their extended families. Family and friends may visit Halpin - Bitecola Brookdale Funeral Home, 1284 Broad St, in Bloomfield, on Wednesday June 1, from 4-8pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home, on Thursday, June 2, at 9:30am. Interment will follow at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa. On behalf of the whole DeValue Family, we will pray for Al and for his family. Al was like an Uncle to us and we will always remember his enthusiasm for hiking and for telling stories.

I knew Al from the AMC. Very friendly and upbeat guy. When he led hikes, I was amazed at how effortlessly he walked the line from front to rear, making sure that all of his people were doing OK. Al maintained the Breakneck Mountain Trail in Harriman State Park. Thanks for the fond memories.

It was fitting to learn of Al's passing over the Memorial Day weekend. He was, on so many levels, a true American hero. We met Al when we moved my mother into assisted living. His constant positive attitude made the transition much easier for her. After my Mom died, we kept up our friendship, occasionally having him to our home or taking him out for dinner. After we moved to Rhode Island, Al took a cruise that stopped in Newport. We met him at the docks and spent the day together, showing him the sights. He was wide-eyed at the Vanderbilt mansion, the Breakers. Al was an unpretentious, simple man, yet he was a true example of greatness. We celebrate his life.Jennifer and Rick Wells

My condolences to the family of Mr. Leigh ,who was a patriot, gentleman ,and did much good serving his country and doing good deeds by helping his fellow man .He was a fine Christian ,role model, and inspiration for others! He is a hero to me for his WW11 U.S.M.C. service and especially Iwo Jima!The world is a poorer place with your passing! God Bless and R.I.P.
