Mrs. De Marco was one of my favorite teachers, maybe my all-time favorite. I learned so much from her, especially when we were preparing for the 4th grade Christmas program in 1963. She taught me that even with make-up or wearing a Santa beard that people can tell you’re smiling just from the look in your eyes. I have never forgotten that. I saw her when I attended Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle in 2006 when I was in town for my 30th college reunion. I was a fairly new Deacon, ordained in 2002, and she was an extraordinary minister of the Eucharistic there. I think she was pleased to know that one of her students became a deacon in the church that she loved so much. Just last year I came upon a copy of the program for that 1963 Christmas show and I sent her a copy. I never did hear back, but I know she was battling Parkinson’s and old age. I will miss her and pray for her soul that the angels and saints will greet her and bring her to God our Heavenly Father.
