Janet Kahn

Janet Kahn passed away after a short illness on August 9, 2026, in Long Branch, New Jersey, at the age of 83.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Georgina Liguori, and was proudly born and raised in Newark. In 1971 she married the love of her life, Leonard Kahn, who passed in 2018, and they lived in South Orange for most of their nearly 50 years together. During that time they raised children, welcomed their grandchild, cared for their own aging parents, and presided over a rotating menagerie of rescued cats, dogs, birds, fish, and reptiles.

Janet was caring and generous, and loved nothing more than being able to help someone who asked. She was funny and outspoken and never hesitated to tell you what was on her mind. She loved to cook “real” food — by which she meant Italian — and was happiest when there was enough to share.

One line of work was never enough for Janet. Throughout her life she worked as a beautician, a messenger, and an administrator for Weight Watchers, while also running a variety of businesses with her husband, including a bagel shop, an ice cream truck, and a T-shirt business. She liked to be busy.

She is survived by her son Kristian; her son Greg and his husband, Terrence; her stepdaughter Adrian Kuchen and her husband, Steve, and grandson Andrew; her stepdaughter Rona and her longtime friend, Maria Marti; and her dear friend, Patricia Sewell. She was predeceased by her brothers Thomas, Joseph, and Louis, and by Jackie and Maggie, her beloved cat and dog.
