Obituary

Katie L. Curry was born on September 13, 1922, in Bluefield, West Virginia, to the late Joe Nathan Williamson and Katie London Harris. After graduating from school, where she excelled in sports, particularly basketball and track, Katie made her way to New Jersey to join her eldest brother, William Williamson. There, she played an instrumental role in nurturing and raising his growing family in the Atlantic City area. In the early 1950s, Katie relocated to Passaic, New Jersey. On August 7, 1954, she entered into matrimony with the love of her life, Leroy Curry. Together, they became affectionately known as Uncle Leroy and Aunt Katie. Professionally, Katie dedicated her career to the Presto lock Company of Clifton, New Jersey, where she served as their first black female shop steward, representing her fellow union workers with pride and distinction. Katie had a passion for Christian music, serving as a lead soprano for the Eastern Core Gil Travel Choir for many years. She also lent her melodious voice to church choirs and frequently graced church services and events for friends and relatives with soul-stirring solos. A longstanding member of New Hope Baptist Church, Katie and Leroy cherished the fellowship they found there in their younger years. Even as their mobility declined, they continued to host gatherings at their home in East Orange, fostering bonds of community and love. On February 22, 2024, Katie L. Curry departed this earthly realm, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion. She is survived by a multitude of friends, neighbors, nephews, nieces, cousins, and godchildren. Katie was a maternal figure and the generational glue that bound her family together. Blessed with over 101 years of life, her memory will forever be cherished, and her impact eternal. Aunt Katie was an aunt to many extended families. I met her through my husband 21 years ago. She was a very close friend to him and his sister’s mom, Ione. She and uncle Leroy accepted me as extended family right away. I enjoyed visiting her for many years.
Aunt Katie we know that you are united with uncle Leroy, your family, and many friends you were missing. We’ll miss you, but we are happy that you are with them now.
Bobby and Bertha, may the memories of Aunt Katie help you find peace and comfort.Sending love, thoughts, and prayers to you and your family.
Brenda, Phil and Maja Madison
