Obituary
Cheryl A. Janson, age 76, succumbed to cancer on Sept. 9, 2023 in New Jersey. She was born in Columbus, Ohio, was preceded in death by her husband Ward W Smith, and is survived by her siblings Phyllis and Doug and numerous cousins. Cheryl earned degrees from The Ohio State University and the University of Wisconsin. She worked as a research biochemist for various chemical and pharmaceutical companies throughout the US and was an adjunct professor at Montclair State University. She had a passion for people and was always willing to help others. She crocheted, knitted, and sewed countless baby blankets, sweaters, quilts, and stuffed animals for family members and a host of charitable groups. The letters she wrote supporting family and friends were legendary. Cheryl loved classical music and played her cello whenever she found spare time. She loved the outdoors and was an avid bicyclist, hiker, and gardener. A Memorial Service will be planned for some future time when family arrangements can be made. In lieu of flowers those wishing to make a memorial donation in Cheryls memory may do so to The Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905.

We would like to extend our condolences to Doug, Phyllis and Cheryl's entire family.
I met Cheryl when I first started a position as the Admin for the RDT Group @ Roche. We spoke daily about work, friends, and family. We grew to have a great admiration and respect for one another. When the Roche Nutley site closed our friendship continued and since Cheryl's family were not local, my family had the pleasure of spending some holidays with her. Cheryl became a staple at our holiday celebrations and was known for her delicious chocolate chip cookies. She would always bake an additional batch for Mark, which no one was allowed to touch. Cheryl was a compassionate, caring, kind and just a genuine person. It gave her joy to make other people happy. She loved to go to Parks Farm every year to pick up bushels of peaches. Cheryl insisted that we go before the end of August as this was when the peaches were at their best. It made Cheryl so happy to give these delicious peaches to her friends, neighbors and family. This is what was so great about Cheryl, these little gestures that would always make a great impact on the people around her. Cherylwas also a great listener, she would let me talk for hours on end about work, family, etc., and I would ask her how she was doing or feeling and she always said the same thing, "just fine, I think?" Cheryl never complained and even when she was terminally ill, she did not complain about her circumstances. We spoke about the great trips she had taken, her love of the outdoors and the places she had worked, how she loved to be a scientist and assisting up and coming scientists in the lab at MSU. Cheryl was with me when I needed her the most. I had a major surgery years ago and needed assistance around my home. Cheryl would ride her bike to my house and assist me with daily chores or just sit with me and watch tv or just talk. I am glad I could provide some sort of comfort to her when she needed it the most. We will keep the memories of Cheryl close and know that she is resting peacefully and is together again with Ward, her family and the Lord!
With deepest sympathy, Jodi Arcuti & the Arcuti Family.

Our deepest condolences to the Janson Family. We worked with Cheryl at Hoffmann-La Roche in Nutley for a number of years. She was a wonderful colleague and coworker, very competent, quiet and pleasant. She was always ready to lend a hand, help out with a project, discuss details and also listen. One of us then continued to interact with her at MSU where again she made important key contributions to a project in her very quiet, patient and unassuming way. The students would call her Dr. Cheryl…We all learned a lot from her. She will be greatly missed.
Ueli GublerAlvin Stern

Phyllis and Doug,, please accept my sympathy for your loss and my sorrow for this tardy letter. I tried repeatedly to call and only now thought of checking on the computer. Cheryl and I became friends in kindergarten and kept it going throughout long lives. It was difficult at the end and I dropped the ball. Please forgive me for that - the fault was at my end; never Cheryl's. God bless you both and comfort you in your loss.
