Obituary

Raymond A. Brown III, 65, of New York, NY passed away on July 20, 2019. The son of late Bloomfield residents Raymond A. Brown Jr. and Audrey R. Brown, Ray grew up in Bloomfield, attending St. Thomas the Apostle School and Regis High School in New York City. After obtaining his bachelors degree cum laude in Classical Languages and Literature from Princeton University, Ray earned a J.D. from Rutgers Law School and an LL.M. in tax law from NYU School of Law. He practiced as a tax attorney in Manhattan for over thirty years and married the love of his life, Linda Franz, on September 3, 1987. Ray was known for his impressive intellect, deeply held moral and political convictions, and gift for making people laugh. Insatiably curious and a lifelong voracious reader, he was the undisputed armchair champion of Jeopardy! and routinely conquered the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle. Particularly knowledgeable about history and current events, he enlivened many a family gathering (and an occasional op ed page) with his well-informed, passionate, and often uproariously funny denunciations of contemporary politics. Ray will be sorely missed not only by Linda but also by his brothers Kevin H. Brown (Ann) of Northboro, MA, Robert K. Brown of Williamsville, NY, and David A. Brown (Laura) of San Francisco, CA; his sisters Marguerite A. Brown of Bloomfield, Mary J. Brown of Bloomfield, and Judith Brown Scott (Jeffrey) of Marlborough, MA; his aunt Virginia A. Richert of Bloomfield; his uncle Robert K. Brown (Robin) of Chappaqua, NY; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Halpin-Bitecola Funeral Home, 1284 Broad Street, Bloomfield, on Friday, July 26th from 4 PM to 8 PM. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, July 27th at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 60 Byrd Avenue, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
As we lose our classmates, we are all put into very direct touch with our own mortality. It is an emotional event. I too did not know Ray well, and while the years and geography separated us, that time we spent in Regis forever joins us. I have utmost pride and respect for all that passed thru Regis. All, including Ray, were indelibly blessed. Telling, as Al Pirovits noted, the thought that another '71 classmate won’t be making our 50th, also came to mind. Ray may not be there, but as with all our other lost classmates, he will be in attendance, in our remembering conversations.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.AMDG

I don't remember if we ever had any homerooms or classes together, but we all shared the Regis bond. We'll remember you next Jug Night.See you, Ray.Deo et Patriae

I did not know him well, but all my classmates have my deepest respect and I am at a loss with each one that passes. I would have been very happy to have been able to see him at fiftieth anniversary and perhaps make contact that was otherwise lacking. MEA CULPA! I will say prayers and offer the following condolences:For those of you who were close to him, I am sure you benefited from his character whether intellectual or spiritual uplifting. It is something to which we all at Regis aspired, I'm sure you agree. REQUIESCAT IN PACE! God bless us all! Amen.
As a fellow classmate of Ray's at Regis H.S. I remember him as having a terrific wit, and an easy smile. While we were not close at Regis, he and I attended many reunions, and his companionship was always welcome. He offered opinions on just about any political topic, and he was generally very insightful. In this day and age, easy smiles are not so often seen. Ray was unique and well-loved.
Bob
Raymond really made Regis come alive for me, a younger sister. He always came home bursting with anecdotes about Father Neville, Mr. Sabatino and other faculty. His relationship with Father Neville was somewhat complex because he handled J.U.G. One day, as Raymond recounted it, he and classmate Neil Boyle were about to enter, about 2 minutes late. In contemplation of the strict enforcement of J.U.G., Raymond then persuaded Neil that they might as well have a nice breakfast first, across the street. They did so!
